Code Enforcement

Functions

The primary functions of the Code Enforcement Department are:

  • To educate the public in code issues
  • To work with the citizens of our community

We are committed to professional code enforcement that is responsive to our citizens. In addition, officers privately enforce regulations as their caseload allows. More information on each of these violation types can by located by referring to the Cleveland Code of Ordinance (DOC).

Complaints

The Code Enforcement Department's workload is principally complaint-generated. The department receives a substantial number of complaints each year concerning alleged violations of the City Code of Laws and Ordinances. Each one is investigated to determine whether a violation exists.

Code Complaint Process

  • To file a complaint during normal business hours, please come to the Police Department and talk to an officer.
  • To file a complaint after hours, you'll need to contact the Fire Department so that someone can be dispatched to assist you.
  • You can also submit an online code complaint. These will be reviewed and assigned to a designee for follow-up.

Other Complaints

In order to file a complaint against the City of Cleveland or its employees, you must come to City Hall and speak with the City Manager.
